- Summary
- On the world scene, Mahatma Gandhi is surrounded by masses of Nationalist followers as he leaves for the prison term imposed by British authorities. In Italy, the worst earthquake of modern times wreaks massive damage. Young Emperor Hirohito of Japan makes a rare public appearance. Ominous Fascist rumblings are heard in Italy and Austria. On the home front, milling crowds invade New York City's employment office as the Depression intensifies. Steelworkers approach completion of the Empire State Building and work continues on the George Washington Bridge. On Mt. Rushmore, the world's largest sculptured monument takes shape. President Coolidge dedicates the dam named for him. Fire damages the White House. The Nobel Prize is awarded to Sinclair Lewis, author of Main Street and Charles Lindbergh sets a new air record on a coast-to-coast flight. In the world of sports, Bobby Jones wins the U. S. Open, Gallant Fox wins the Preakness, Helen Wills Moody wins Wimbledon, and the Cardinals clinch the World Series. George Stathakis meets his death in a fatal barrel plunge over Niagara. The tape concludes with the opening of a new session of Congress, marked by demonstrations by Communists outside the Capitol. Legislators must deal with major problems of unemployment, Prohibition, farm relief and taxes.
