Summary
This African folktale, adapted in iconographic form, is set in a remote village in the hills of Cameroon, central Africa. Here, the men live in square houses, the women in round ones. A girl eloquently retells the story told by her grandmother concerning the origin of her village's unusual configurations. Long ago, the people lived in dwellings of any sort. One day, the nearby volcano Naka exploded in wrath covering everything and everyone with ash. No one could recognize the other, and the only homes which remained were a square one and a round one. Gathering his subjects around him, the village chief decreed that the tall thin things should reside in the square structures and the round beings in the circular ones.
