Summary
This tragic portrait of a man caught between two cultures centers on Joe Leahy, a successful mixed race coffee grower in Papua New Guinea. The son of a New Guinea highlander woman and an Australian gold prospector, Leahy earned a fortune establishing a thriving coffee plantation on land sold cheaply to him by the Ganiga tribe. Anxious to share Joe's prosperity, the Ganigas negotiated to join in partnership with him on a second venture. It is at this crucial juncture that the filmmakers document the unfortunate string of events that occurred when world coffee prices plummeted. Cameras record the tensions that simmered when Joe was forced to reduce the wages of the Ganiga pickers, a situation exacerbated by warfare with a neigboring tribe and Joe's perceived violation of a sacred ritual. As the beans rot unpicked on the vine, Joe considers leaving New Guinea for a new life in Australia. In his absence, warfare escalates causing widespread death and devastation.
