Summary
This documentary charts the struggles of the largely Indian Guatemalan peasantry against a long heritage of state and foreign oppression. Based on the experiences of Rigoberta Menchú, a 23-year-old Indian woman now living in exile, the film interweaves a variety of forms, interview, direct address, newsreel, re-enactment and video transmission, to present a canvas of Guatemalan suffering. Topics include: the long series of U.S.-backed military dictators, government death squads who terrorize the campesinos, the organization of peasant guerrilla groups, the work of priests and nuns, and the rise of evangelical cults to fill the religious vacuum left by the persecution of the activist clergy.
