Summary
The EVC team probes the causes of youth crime and questions the handling of youthful offenders in efforts to "look at the stories behind the statistics." EVC members interview juvenile delinquents of diverse backgrounds who reveal the varied motivations for their actions. After his mother died, Gary's life spun out of control leading him to sell crack. Arrested three times, Gary spent seven years in jail before seeking aid at the Andrew Glover Youth Program. EVC reporter Kevin Grant goes to his neighborhood of Crown Heights to interview a friend who steals cars and deals for "fun" in order to get money. The teenagers' accounts are supplemented by the comments of Bronx probation officer Carlos Romirez and Angel Rodriguez, a youth counselor, who calls for reform of the criminal justice system. The tape is dedicated to Kevin Grant who was tragically shot down by a teenager only two weeks after completing the production.
