- Summary
- 1.) Picturing Oriental girls: a [re] educational videotape (1992) (Oxygen Productions; director, Valerie Soe, 12 min.): In this visual compendium, Soe exposes the "orientalism" and exoticism prevalent in mass media images of Asian American women by juxtaposing text from "mail-order-bride" catalogues and men's magazine with clips from over 25 films and television programs. 2.) Open letter: grasp the bird's tail (1992) (Peace of Heart Productions; director, Brenda Joy Lem, 15 min.): Structuring her thoughts in the form of a letter to her lover, a young woman confronts the very real fears of being an Asian American woman in a perilous world of misogynistic and anti-Asian hostility. She imagines herself a magician's assistant confined to a box in which she must elude the dangers of repeated sword thrusts.
