Description
1 videocassette (39 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
On April 29, 1992, four Los Angeles police officers were acquitted of the beating of Rodney King, an African American man. In the wake of the verdict, L. A. was consumed by angry demonstrations, fires and looting. Caught up in the devastating upheaval were members of the Korean American community who suffered half of the losses in the crisis. They called what happened "Sa-I-gu," literally, "April 29." Bracketed by the funeral of 18-year-old Edward Song Lee who was mistakenly shot and killed as a looter by another Korean, this tape gives voice to the victims by featuring the reactions of three Korean American women shopowners. In candid interviews, the women, including Edward's mother, describe their struggles to raise families and build businesses in an often strange and hostile land. They recount the terrible events of April 29th and criticize the media which they felt played up a Korean/Black conflict. The women also decry what they felt was a betrayal by the African American community, point to discrimination by whites as a root cause of the unrest and protest the unresponsiveness of law enforcement who they say stood by while their stores were destroyed.
