- Summary
- Go west (1925), b&w, 69 min.: This feature offers a glimpse of Keaton's more expressive mode of comedy. Heeding Horace Greeley's expansionist call, a hapless young man, appropriately named Friendless, hops a freight train westward. He meets his destiny first in a teeming metropolis where he is trampled by rush hour foot traffic and then into the ranchlands of Arizona. During the course of his attempts at bronco-bustng, cattle wrangling and dairy farming, Friendless becomes enamored of Brown Eyes, an affectionate bovine beauty whom he saves from the stockyards. In an epic sequence, hundreds of head of cattle are unleashed on downtown Los Angeles wreaking havoc. The scarecrow (1920), b&w, 19 min.: Keaton plays an outcast who lives with a roommate in a shack full of hilarious homemade mechanical devices. Both men are rivals for the attentions of the farmer's daughter. Buster gets involved in a chase with a dog foaming at the mouth from a cream pie and is inadvertently sucked into a harvest machine which strips him of his clothes. He steals a scarecrow's clothes and takes its place. The paleface (1921), b&w, 20 min.: This was one of Keaton's first attempts at applying documentary techhniques and point of view to the filming of comedy. Keaton plays a butterfly-chasing entomoloigst who wanders straight into an intertribal Indian war. Saving miracles include his 600-foot slide down a mountainous gravel slope, an escape from a burning cabin in home-made asbestos underwear, a hair-raising leap into a tree, and a perilous crossing of a ravine.
