- Summary
- Originally planned as a serious adaptation of the Peter George novel, Kubrick's Cold War cautionary tale has come to be regarded as a masterpiece of black comedy. The narrative centers on the demented General Jack D. Ripper's decision to launch an attack inside the Soviet Union. Ripper's motivation for initiating a nuclear war is his paranoid conviction that a Communist conspiracy is responsible for his diminished sexual potency. Throughout the film, Kubrick reiterates the officer's obsession with a series of suggestive metaphors. Peter Sellers distinguishes himself in a triptych of roles: the title role of the eccentric scientist, the president of the U.S., and Captain Mandrake, a British officer who fails to dissuade General Ripper from his mad design.
