Summary
Born in 1922, pianist Jaki Byard is a jazz musican who lives in Queens, New York with his wife and three children. He has performed and recorded with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Eric Dolphy, Don Ellis, Duke Ellington, Paul Chambers, Earl "Fatha" Hines, George Benson, Ron Carter, and Charles Mingus. This portrait of Byard, who teaches at the New England Conservatory of Music, features the musician in solo piano performance and with his big band, The Apollo Stompers. Commentary, accompanied by family photographs and home movies, is provided by bassist Ron Carter and pianist Bill Evans (who died in 1980 shortly after the film was made).
