- Summary
- In this adaptation of the long-running Broadway musical, Barbra Streisand made her screen debut reprising her stage role as the inimitable Fanny Brice. At the turn of the century, young Fanny, lacking good looks but possessed of unswerving ambition, is determined to leave the Lower East Side. Losing her job in a chorus line, she wins audience approval in a slapstick roller skating number and attracts the attention of notorious gambler Nicky Arnstein. Arnstein introduces Brice to Florenz Ziegfeld who hires her for his famous Follies. For Fanny, fame and fortune follow but are undermined by a troubled marriage to Nick. Musical numbers include: "I'm the greatest star;" "His love makes me beautiful;" "Don't rain on my parade;" "People;" "My man;" "Temporary arrangement;" "If a girl isn't pretty;" "Roller skate rag;" "You are woman, I am man;" "Sadie Sadie;" "Funny girl;" "I'd rather be blue;" "Second Hand Rose."
