Summary
This program traces the early history of man's adventures in space. It highlights the career of inventor Robert Goddard and charts the early development of the rocket as a weapon of war in Germany. In America, Chuck Yeager succeeded in breaking the sound barrier, but the Soviets became the first in space by launching the satellite Sputnik I. America's technical excellence was challenged and the U.S. entered the space race with the formation of NASA and the selection of the Mercury astronauts.
