Summary
This iconographic version of Nina Jaffe's folktale begins with a brief history of Hanukkah, a holiday that "celebrates light, warmth, religious freedom and the right to be different." The story, set in Poland during the Hanukkah season, concerns the three children of an impoverished peddler named Mendel. Each night, they stand outside the window of Feivel, a wealthy merchant, to inhale the delicious aroma of his latkes or potato pancakes. When the rich man catches them, he angrily demands that they pay for their enjoyment. The rabbi is called to mediate and informs the community that the peddler will pay with the sound of money since it was merely the smell of the food that the children took. The merchant reforms and from that time on, the families of Mendel and Feivel celebrate Hanukkah together.
