Summary
In 1961 Robert Young and Michael Roemer made a film about Cortile Cascino, the worst slum in Palermo, Sicily. Thirty years later Young's son, Andrew, and Susan Todd returned to Palermo to find the slum gone but not the social problems. The new film, cross-cutting frequently between 1961 and 1991, centres on Angela now separated from her husband after years of mistreatment. He is chronically unemployed and a rabid monarchist. By implication the film suggests how the Mafia gains its strength at the grass-roots.
