- Biography of Barbara Baum, the young daughter of German settlers living in the settlement of Burnt Cabins in the Pennsylvania mountains who was carried off by the Indians in 1783. She had earlier made friends with an Indian to whom she often gave treats of bread and butter and sugar, and this "bread-and-butter Indian" rescued her and led her home.
