Summary
The eruption of Mt. St. Helens in May 1980 claimed scores of lives, turned forest into wasteland and held a region in danger for months. This program analyzes the events leading up to the blast and analyzes the actual explosion, frame-by-frame. A helicopter carrying scientists and the NOVA crew travels through the poison gas plume, lands on ash of intense heat and visits survey posts set up in the mouth of the crater. Instruments yield valuable clues for scientists planning for the next eruption in hopes of preventing a natural wonder from inflicting catastrophic damage.
