- Summary
- For director Peter Adair, testing positive for the HIV virus, provided the impetus for making this film about people who are HIV positive, but who have not yet developed AIDS. Eleven people, ages 17 to 55, and representing a cross-section of backgrounds, recount their stories: being informed of test results, breaking the news to family, friends and partners, overcoming feelings of guilt and prejudice, and coming to terms with a heightened sense of mortality. Members of the gay community, among them videomaker Marlon Riggs, discuss "coming out," the ironies of sexual liberation, and caring for loved ones who developed full-blown AIDS. The impact of drug use on the transmission of the virus is illustrated by three women, former heroin addicts, one of whom passed the virus on to her baby son. Among heterosexuals, infection is also on the rise. A retired logger contracted the virus through a contaminated blood transfusion and then transmitted it to his wife through unprotected sex. A young father acquired the virus from his first wife who was an intravenous drug user. At the conclusion, Adair contemplates his own life and considers the ways in which the disease has become part of his identity.
