Summary
In 1939, the combined Jewish population of Poland, Hungary, and Czechoslavakia was over four million. Today, it is just over one hundred thousand. Yale Strom, a klezmer musician, and fellow filmmaker Oren Rudavsky journeyed throughout Eastern Europe to explore the lives of the Jewish people who remained. Employing his musical talents as a common thread, Yale visits elderly inhabitants in Poland and Hungary who struggle to preserve Jewish traditions in a world changed forever by Hitler and World War II. They speak of deportations, confiscated lands and present isolation. For Eastern Europe's younger generations, the subject of Jewish religion and culture is more complicated. Eager to discover and reclaim their heritage, some have joined Jewish clubs and are learning Yiddish and Hebrew. For others, victimized by the Communist government's anti-Semitic purges of the late 1960's, the search for Jewish identity is colored by ambivalence and danger. Pointing to a resurgence of interest in things Jewish, the film concludes with the visit from the U.S. to Poland of renowned folksinger, Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach.
