Summary
This comedy/drama is a nostalgic look at a bygone era and a neighborhood "that is only a memory." Set in the Bronx soon after World War II, it is the story of Danny Di Prima, a returning vet and aspiring songwriter intent on leaving the circumscribed world he grew up in. Visiting a local bar with his friend Freddy, Danny meets Walter "Logs" Laganegra ("The Bronx cheers for logs"), a terrifying bull of a man who was once a contender for the World Heavyweight Championship, but presently reduced to throwing fights for easy money. Logs takes a possessive liking to Danny, convinced that he is the only person who truly understands him. He even secures an appointment for Danny with Milton Gold, a renowned record publisher, but manages to dash Danny's chances by going berserk in the office. Desperate to extricate himself from this oppressive friendship, Danny concocts a plan which will alienate Logs and ingratiate himself once more with Milton Gold.
