- Summary
- This adaptation of the Anouilh play, set in 12th-century England and concerning the separation of church and state, charts the stormy relationship of the Archbishop of Canterbury, Thomas á Becket, and King Henry II. When Henry confers the bishopric on Thomas, the king's former chancellor and wenching companion experiences a reformation of the spirit and dedicates himself to the service of God. The king is infuriated by the ecclesiastical devotion of his former friend and resolves to eliminate him, a decision that culminates in the dramatic assassination scene in the cathedral.
