Summary
Director Bernardo Bertolucci narrates this documentary on the making of his film, "1900." For Bertolucci, the film is a personal odyssey, a return to the land where he was born. The elaborate saga follows the lives of two characters, a peasant and a landowner, from childhood to old age in a cinematic dialectic of class conflict. Actors Burt Lancaster, Sterling Hayden, Robert DeNiro, Gerard Depardieu, Dominique Sanda and Donald Sutherland discuss their contributions to the film and their relationship to the director. Bertolucci describes the technical difficulties involved in filmmaking on a grand scale and his ideas about the cinema as a "constant revolution" fusing improvisation, premeditation, chance and emotions.
