Summary
A bamboo raft courses through a forest gorge, piloted by a man in a faded army suit. The raft heads toward the rapids but the man steers clear and brings it back on course. This opening scene takes place in the mountainous area south of the Yangtze River during the conflicts of the Chinese Revolution and the Great Leap Forward of 1958. The man on the raft is Lung Kuo-cheng. He is on his way to join a battle where peasants and workers are fighting to create a new kind of college in the countryside. Produced in 1975 during the last years of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution, this film typifies the new works of art created during this time.
