Summary
Godard's fifth film is a personal reflection on war. Lured by promises of booty, Ulysse and Michel-Ange leave their mother and sister to fight for king and country. However, the king signs a peace treaty with the enemy. The two peasants receive their reward for faithful service at the hands of a firing squad. To create this anti-war film, "Godard used Brechtian distancing techniques and literary devices, shooting in the grainy images of old newsreels in an unspecified time and place."
