Summary
Each Labor Day, three million people converge on Brooklyn's Eastern Parkway to celebrate West Indian history and culture in a magnificent Pan-Caribbean Carnival. Extravagant floats, costumes, calypso music, steel drum bands and stands of tropical food grace the boulevard in a grand spectacle modeled after Trinidad's yearly festival. This film captures the thoughts and feelings of expatriate West Indians as they are interviewed during preparations leading up to the Carnival. The camera goes behind the scenes to observe the construction of the sculpture-like costumes which combine artistry with a keen grasp of engineering. For Carnival participants, the festival is an integral way of maintaining a sense of identity and preserving continuity of cultural traditions.
