Summary
Program 307: Going home by Nicholasa Mohr is the highlighted "Junior novel". 11-year-old Felita tries to come to terms with her heritage when she visits relatives in Puerto Rico for the first time. Nicholasa Mohr is the guest on "Author interview." Just be gorgeous by Barbara Wersba, a recommended title in the "Romance" category, is the story of the friendship between a New York City teen named Heidi and Jeffrey, a homeless, gay street performer. Check it out pursues "Ideas from high school" with the query: "Of the books you were required to read, which did you like best?" "Book bind" critics analyze Marilyn Singer's Several kinds of silence, the story of Franny who tries to shut off her feelings completely when faced with her grandmother's illness and an attraction to a boy her parents would disapprove of. The life of "City kids" is explored in City light, Harry Mazer's novel about a teenage boy who begins a new relationship with the aid of a computer. Rockabye crocodile by Jose Aruego and Ariane Dewey is a recommended "Book to read to your little brothers and sisters." The plot thickens in General Library as Trent/Tony vows Yolande to secrecy regarding his true identity. Trent uses the library's reference books to sustain his pretense. Program 308: Anthony Burns: the defeat and triumph of a fugitive slave by Virigina Hamilton is this program's highly-praised "Junior novel." Virginia Hamilton is the guest on "Author interview." Also recommended to young adult readers is Betty Levin's The Trouble with Gramary. A girl's longing for a conventional existence is undermined by her eccentric sculptor grandmother. Paul Galdone's The Monkey and the crocodile is a charming "Book to read to your little brothers and sisters." Barbara Hambly's Those who hunt the night is an apt selection for "Mystery and suspense" and concerns the mysterious killing of vampires. High school students are asked: "What's your favorite kind of book?" Scorpions by Walter Dean Myers is critiqued in "Book bind." Jamal assumes leadership of a Harlem gang called the Scorpions and finds that his enemies treat him with respect when he acquires a gun. In the continuing saga of General Library, Paula needs a video to complete her makeover and her friend Gina tells her about the library's video collection. Trent/Tony receives a call from Robin Bleach of Lifestyles for the rich and fatuous requesting an interview.
