- Summary
- This "impressionistic evocation of the experience of migration to England" traces the meditations of a black woman on her death bed. In a dream-like state, the woman contemplates her isolation in a new land and the life left behind in St. Lucia. Her three children stand at her bedside, consider their position in England, and ask why their mother emigrated. She explains: "Sometimes your dreams depend on what's available." Later, she amends it to "what's not available."
