- Summary
- In this Japanese anti-war film, acts of cannibalism reinforce the terrifying brutality of war. During the collapse of the Japanese army in the Philippines, a soldier, Tamura, is sent to a hospital but is rejected due to his tubercular condition. He is forced to wander the hills without sustenance, harassed by American tanks and terrified by "fires on the plain," conflagrations set by Filipinos in vengeance against the Japanese. Tamura meets several soldiers who have resorted to cannibalism for survival and joins two stragglers, unsuspectingly sharing human flesh with them. Ichikawa's film helped initiate the war film genre in Japan with its depiction of physical and mental devastation.
