- Summary
- Lowery Sims, Associate Curator for 20th Century Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, introduces this portrait of Faith Ringgold, African-American artist, feminist and activist. Ringgold relates her early interest in art as a child often homebound due to asthma and encouraged by her mother, a fashion designer, who kept her well stocked with paper, crayons and cloth. Attending City College, Ringgold was inspired by the artists of the Harlem Renaissance and persevered despite the harsh criticism of art professors. Influenced by both the beauty and practicality of Tibetan tankas, or paintings on cloth, Ringgold used this method to convey her own personal artistic vision. Her works, incorporating painted images of the Black experience with quilted borders and detailing, have helped raise the quilt from mere craft status to high art. Her creations also include written stories, though Ringgold now plans to publish her narratives in book form, hence, the subtitle, "last story quilt." The tape concludes with a consideration of Ringgold's work done in France composed mainly of African/American feminist re-interpretations of famous French paintings.
