Summary
This experimental documentary uses the recently-discovered archives of Luca Comerio (1874-1940), a pioneer of Italian documentary film. The filmmakers have re-photographed, hand tinted and slowed Comerio's footage of exotic people, literally shot from the pole to equator around 1910. Scenes of early Arctic whalers, Cossack-like soldiers riding on horseback, missionary schools and British India at teatime are set to a minimal electronic score. Although the film is lyrical and dreamlike, the spectral images suggest a disturbing recurrent theme, that of western man as predator.
