Summary
Mixing lyricism, irony and social criticism, this film from the People's Republic of China is the story of a pampered, lively 12-year-old girl who, at the turn of the century, is taken to a remote village and married to a 2-year-old boy. As she approaches womanhood, she develops a sisterly affection for her toddling husband but finds more fulfilling companionship with a young farmer. The illicit affair, however, places her at risk of punishment according to the village's harsh measures against adultery. Freed from the restrictions imposed by the Cultural Revolution, this example of New Chinese Cinema captures the textures and rhythms of rural life while recognizing the brutality and backwardness of feudal structures.
