Summary
Nigel and Rupert Woo ruefully note that it is the first day of summer which means that their father will cut off their hair and make them the laughingstock of their friends. Their father, David, enjoys cutting their hair because it continues a family tradition from his childhood in China. The boys desperately try to convince him that "this isn't China" and enlist the aid of their mother in their campaign against the dreaded haircuts. Despite their combined protests, the boys' father cuts their hair, causing family conflict. David apologizes to his sons and tries to explain the deep attachment he has for his heritage. In response, Rupert and Nigel recite a Confucian proverb: "Things change 10,000 times in the blink of an eye. The past is bygone; the present prevails." Later, the boys find the cutting shears in the trash.
