- Summary
- This documentary profiles the life and work of five notable women photographers born around the turn of the century, who perfected their craft in an era when photography was a male domain. Using examples of their photography with clips from news of the day, the tape meshes on-camera interviews with historical contexts. Gisele Freund, a reporter-photographer, describes her harrowing escape from Nazi Germany with incriminating negatives taped to her body. Louise Dahl-Wolfe recalls her evolution from young art student to the creator of Harpers Bazaar covers. Maurine Loomis discusses her metamorphosis from movie stand-in at MGM to highly-respected photographer of Hollywood stars. Lisette Model, the teacher of Diane Arbus, reveals her unique photographic vision and offers her method for making a successful photograph. Practicing her art in Japan for over 70 years, Eiko Yamazawa composes her precise photographs with the eye of an abstract painter.
