- A racetrack laborer, touring tracks in Ohio in the early 1900's, lies to a wealthy and beautiful woman in hopes of impressing her. When she reveals her fondness for him, he feels trapped and unable to tell her the truth. His insight at the conclusion forms the title of this story.
