Summary
Despite his mother's assurances that his older brother, Anthony, really loves him, Nicholas is resentful of his sibling's indifferent attitude. Anthony will not read to Nicholas or allow him to play with him and his friends. Frustrated by Anthony's callous treatment, Nicholas contemplates the day, when he turns six, that he will exact revenge. He dreams of attending a baseball game with his father while Anthony remains at home sick with the measles, of going to the movies alone with his grandfather because Anthony has a cold and of owning a dog that will love him and hate his brother. In addition, six-year-old Nicholas imagines the triumph he will savor in outracing, outjumping and outswimming his older brother. Anthony's scream, however, transports Nicholas back to reality and the hope that his sixth birthday will arrive soon.
