- What is the character and quality of the near-death experience and do such experiences represent an authentic encounter with a world beyond, or are they an artifact of the brain's activity? Psychiatrist Raymond A. Moody, author of Life after life, Reflections on life after life, Laugh after laugh, and The Light beyond, is a founding member of the International Association for Near-Death Studies. He has interviewed more than one thousand individuals who have been resuscitated from clinical death. The common qualities of the near-death experience include feelings of profound peace, out-of-body sensation, meetings with "beings of light" and one's deceased relatives, reviewing one's life, and a reluctance to return. Dr. Moody reviews several theories of the near-death experience and affirms his personal belief that such episodes are best explained as a genuine encounter with a world beyond death. He explores the significance of these experiences as necessary to our understanding of the collective unconscious.
