- Description
- 1 videocassette (75 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
- Summary
- When Imamura went to Southeast Asia, he met one of the "karayuki-san," Japanese women abducted from their homeland and forced to labor as prostitutes on the Malay Peninsula. The woman, now old and penniless, guides the filmmaker on a tour of the streets where the brothels once thrived and introduces him to other former prostitutes. Through a series of interviews, the director comes to understand how the karayuki-san were used to spearhead Japanese economic expansion overseas during the first decades of this century.
