Description
1 videocassette (85 min.) : sd., b&w.; 1/2 in.
Summary
The advent of sound film and the worsening economic scene spurred the production of escapist German musicals of which The Congress dances is considered one of the most memorable. This first film directed by Charell, whose career was in the theater, is set in Vienna during the Congress of 1814/1815 convened to conclude Napoleon's career. It has been described as "a pastiche of sweeping staircases, open air cafes, costumed balls and military parades..." and was the most costly German musical to date. Lilian Harvey plays the beautiful Christel Weinzinger, a glove-seller who wins the heart of Czar Alexander who has arrived in Vienna to help determine Napoleon's fate. Harvey's "scintillating" performance earned her a contract, albeit a shortlived one, with Darryl Zanuck's Fox Studios.
