- Summary
- In this iconographic adaptation of a popular fable, a cat, a dog, a mouse and a little red hen all lived together in a cozy little house. The cat liked to sleep on the couch, the dog on the sunny back porch; the mouse snoozed all day in a chair by the fireside. The little red hen had to do all the house and yard work. While howing the garden one day, the industrious hen discovered some grains of wheat and asked which of her companions would help her plant the seeds. All refused and so the hardworking fowl did it herself. When the wheat grew tall and ripe, she again asked which of her friends would help her cut it. Once again, she was left to complete the chore alone. Her slothful companions also refused to grind the wheat into flour and help her bake a cake. However, when the cake was finished and all smelled its wonderful aroma, they were more than willing to help the hen eat it. The little red hen chastised the group for their laziness and ate the confection to the last crumb. Thereafter, the hen's three housemates were more than eager to aid her with work.
