- Summary
- Author Mildred Taylor reads passages from her Newbery Medal-winning book, Roll of thunder, hear my cry, in Mississippi where the novel is set. Taylor correlates aspects of the plot to her family's life and to the general experiences of blacks in the South of the 1930's. Roll of thunder, hear my cry is the story of a black boy who puts his faith in two white youths who rob a grocery store and subsequently betray him to a lynch mob. The narrative is recounted from the point of view of Cassie Logan, a black girl who progresses from innocence to awareness and disillusionment. Taylor's readings are interwoven with autobiographical reminiscences, drawings from the novel, photographs and contemporary footage. For the author, Roll of thunder, hear my cry is one of many links in the storytelling chain that binds succeeding generations of her family.
