- Summary
- The star of this animated adaptation is Max, a musically gifted hippopotamus who can play virtually any instrument including, trombone, bass, xylopone, flute, harmonica, cymbals, synthesizer and accordion. Playing by note and by ear, Max practices all the time much to the chagrin of his father and neighbors who are driven to distraction. The virtuoso's only ally is his doting mother. Over time, Max decides that he is no longer in the mood to play his array of instruments and stops. Much to their surprise, his father and the townspeople discover that they miss Max's musical performances. When Max finally resumes his musical avocation, he forms a community orchestra with himself as conductor.
