Summary
Bassanio, a noble but poor Venetian, asks his friend Antonio to help him get three thousand ducats to enable him to prosecute fittingly his suit of the rich heiress Portia. Shylock, a Jewish usurer, consents to lend the money to Antonio against a bond by which, in case the sum is not repaid at the appointed day, Antonio shall forfeit a pound of flesh. Upon default the usurer insists of payment of his bond and when the matter is brought before the duke, the young Venetian is rescued by Portia disguised as a male lawyer.
