- Summary
- This portrait of the Easter celebration in Sevilla, Spain evokes the religious and emotional power of the festival as a spiritual and public event. This is indicated by the metaphorical imagery of waves of people, waves of emotion. Thousands of Sevillanos participate in the Holy Day ceremonies, from hooded penitents to the teams of costeleros carrying effigies of the Virgin and Christ on their shoulders. Encompassing Catholic dogma and the pagan rites of spring, Holy Week in Sevilla places emphasis on the Virgin Mary, adding nuance to the metaphorical wave and transforming it into a feminine symbol.
