Summary
Michael Pritchard and students from St. Louis, New York City, Cleveland, Detroit and Columbia, South Carolina analyze the pressures they face: academic competition, parental expectations and peer acceptance. Pritchard asks the young people to grapple with the following questions: "What are some of the pressures you are coping with as seniors? How do you cope with your failures? What's a good, healthy pressure in your lives?" Pritchard counsels the group with the advice: "We can't choose to live without pressure but we can choose how to respond to pressure." A person must decide whether he can cope with pressure alone or must seek help. To illustrate the quandaries which arise when confronted by a peer pressure situation, Pritchard offers a hypothetical situation: "You and your girlfriend are invited to a party where you will be the only females with a group of twelve guys. You really don't want to go, but your friend does. What do you do?"
