- Summary
- Godard's Algerian War film is an ironic study of freedom, war, and personal commitment. Bruno Forestier, a French Army deserter, works in Switzerland for a right-wing terrorist organization. Under orders to kill Palivoda, a Swiss broadcaster with Arab sympathies, Bruno meets and falls in love with Veronica Dreyer, who, unbeknownst to him, works for the Arabs. After several abortive attempts to eliminate Palivoda, Bruno is captured and tortured by the Arabs. In an attempt to attain freedom for himself and Veronica, Bruno finally kills Palivoda, only to discover that his side has apprehended Veronica and tortured her to death.
