Summary

Rising up out of the Egyptian desert is the enormous Great Pyramid at Giza. Host David Macaulay examines how it was possible that two million blocks of stone were fitted together so skillfully by a civilization that existed in 2500 B.C. He analyzes the lives of the Egyptian rulers, the significance of their tombs, and the nature of their religious beliefs. Granted unprecedented access to Egypt's historic sites, Macaulay takes a rare look at the mummy of Ramses II and the tombs in the sacred Valley of the Kings. Live action footage of Egypt's important archaeological sites is juxtaposed with animated sequences which tell the story of the Egyptian monarchs Sneferu and Khufu (also known as Cheops) from the point of view of the scribe Hordedef, son of the pharaoh, Khufu. Hordedef charts the intrigue for succession among the pharaoh's heirs and their mothers, the jealous queens. He details the methods involved in the construction of the pyramids and the funerary rites for his father, Khufu.
