- Summary
- The traditional culture of the Six Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy (Oneida, Seneca, Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga and Tuscarora) also called the League of the Haudenosaunee or Longhouse is introduced in this documentary produced for the Akwesasne Freedom School on the St. Regis-Akwesasne (Mohawk) Reservation. Rooted in concentric circles of family, clan and nation, this matrilineal society is cohered by its reverence for nature and in political harmony to the eternal Tree of Peace. In re-enactments of a traditional longhouse ceremony, tribute is paid to the gifts of Mother Earth and thanks are offered to the inhabitants of the heavens. Although members of the Iroquois nations are employed in a variety of fields, they successfully bridge traditional and modern worlds and are ardent protectors of the environment.
