- Summary
- The assemblage art of Betye Saar merges the mystical with the social concerns of black America. This documentary probes the art, the spirit and the symbols of Saar's work. The artist's interest in Caribbean culture with its blending of Indian, African and European influences as well as its mixture of voodoo and Christianity is revealed in her Altar Services. In other works, she liberates sterotyped black images from derogatory contexts, simultaneously penetrating old and new levels of meaning and awareness.
