Summary
This animated retelling of the Micmac Indian legend explains the cycle of the seasons. In the distant past, the giant Winter held the people in his frigid grip. Streams and rivers turned to ice; snow covered the land and fires flickered and died. Facing starvation, the people appealed to the great spirit Glooscap. Hearing their cries, Glooscap strode through the forest and confronted Winter, only to be charmed by him into a deep sleep. Glooscap's messengers, the loons, called to him in his slumber, telling him of a beautiful princess who lived far to the south. Breaking free of Winter's spell, Glooscap journeyed southward on the back of a great whale and found Summer in the form of a beautiful maiden, surrounded by green grass, flowers and butterflies. Together, they returned north where Summer melted Winter's magic and agreed to keep him at bay for six moons each year. This story, one of many variations, is brought to life with swirling brush strokes and muted colors and combines drawing, music and voice. The animator first heard the legend as a child in Belgium.
