Description
1 videocassette (22 min.) : sd., col.; 1/2 in.
Summary
Cousteau and his crew examine the habits of the walrus, its migration from Alaska to the Arctic Sea and the necessity for Eskimos to hunt it even though it is near extinction. The walrus is relatively safe during its retreat in remote polar ice fields, but the shallow waters of continental shelves which are rich in food for the walrus are also the hunting grounds for those who depend on the animal for food, clothing and the boats made from the skins of the female. While filming a hunt, Cousteau's team adopts a walrus pup that has become orphaned and teaches it to swim and hunt. The program discusses the antagonism between conservationists and the Eskimos who must kill walrus to survive in their isolated communities.
