- Description
- 2 film reels (60 min.) : sd., b&w/col.; 16 mm.
- Summary
- Using rare archival material, including Soviet and American science fiction and government propaganda films, U.S. Air Force films, newsreels, NASA footage, television shows and radio broadcasts, this compilation documentary, unfolding without narration, offers an ironic look at the imagery of the space race and its Cold War underpinnings. Beginning with a UFO invasion of Washington and ending with the Moon landing, the film interweaves fact and fiction and emphasizes the years 1957, when Sputnik was launched and 1962, the year John Glenn orbited the earth. The space race became a cogent expression of the military rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union and the ultimate propaganda vehicle for projecting the superiority of one society over the other.
